Soral Keratin Hair Straightening Treatment in Shariah

Question:

Can you ask a Mufti if its permissible to do this hair straightening sorali hair treatment. Its halal certified and they say it doest leave a coat so water goes through. pls find out, I desperately want to do it.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We understand that the Sorali hair treatment is a form of a keratin hair treatment in which the hair cuticle is sealed with keratin proteins/chemicals to straighten the hair temporarily.

In principle, the hair follicles of a female whether plaited or unplaited should be washed at the base of the head in Wudhu and Ghusl in order for same to be valid in Shariah.

Furthermore, it is impermissible to correct the fundamental biological state of the human body including the hair in a permanent manner. Therefore if the hair treatment is conducted to alter the biological state of the female hair in a permanent manner then that will fall under the purview of Taghyeer al-Khalq/human biological alteration which is impermissible. In general, the keratin treatment is a form of temporary hair treatment.

Moreover, the fundamental ingredients of the hair treatments should be considered for Halal compliance and also the underlying medical effects of such a treatment based on the individual medical scenario. We have been informed that certain treatments have major biological and medical side effects. Consider using treatments of a purely vegetable or non-animal source.

Also, we understand that generally these treatments would take a period of time after the treatment before they can be removed hence making it practically nearly impossible to perform Wudhu and Ghusl.

With regards to your actual question and based on the above principled viewpoint, if you are certain of the permeable Halal nature of the product treatment in reference based on factual evidence and you sought the advice of a reliable Muslim dermatologist, then it will be permitted for you to use such a product.

However due to the complexity of the matter and differing views, we advise you to use alternative hair treatments as we should exercise extreme caution in the matter of Taharah/purity in our religious activities.

We have reviewed the underlying biological file and we are unable to determine the permeable Halal nature of the products in reference. We also advise you to seek the advice of the South African National Halal Authority (SANHA) under the esteemed leadership of Hazrat Ml Mohammed Sa’eed Navlakhi Saheb DB for a more detailed biological and scientific review.
